EARTHQUAKES

Earthquakes are natural disasters. “Natural disasters” mean disasters that happen naturally. Volcanic eruptions and tsunamis are examples. Another example is earthquakes. Here are the things that I’ll be teaching you (there are many others I know):

  •  How earthquakes occur

  • Where do earthquakes occur and

  • What to do during an earthquake

How earthquakes occur

There are many ways earthquakes occur, but I will only tell you one. The surface of the earth is made of many large pieces, or plates, that are moving very slowly. Most of the earthquakes occur at the edges of these plates, where they grate against each other. In some places, the rocks are moving all the time, so small tremors happen almost everyday. In other places, the rocks try to move past each other, but they get stuck. The stress builds up for many years until finally, the rock snaps and a powerful earthquake jolts the land.

Where do earthquakes occur

Earthquakes can occur anywhere in the world, at any time. So, since there’s nothing else to talk about in this topic, I’ll skip to the next (and the last) topic.

What should you do during an earthquake

Stand there and panic? No! Here’s what you should do in an earthquake:

1.       If you’re indoors, duck under a sturdy desk or table and stay there until the ground stops shaking.

2.       If you’re in a shop, move away from display shelves.

3.       If you’re outside, go to a big open space.

4.       If you’re near buildings, shelter in a doorway.

5.       If you’re at the beach, move to higher ground or inland.

6.       If you’re in a car/bus, get the driver to pull over. Steer clear of bridges.

7.       After an earthquake, be prepared for aftershocks. You might need to take cover again.

Remember these steps and you’ll be fine!
